If you are lucky, your shipments will arrive quickly, your sponsor will have provided or lent you many useful items, and you will perhaps have had the chance to mail ahead or carry a load of your children’s special belongings. If you are less fortunate, you may be playing hide-and-seek among the drapes in a barren house for many weeks to come.

Being stuck with children in temporary housing or in your home without your belongings for a long period is undoubtedly one of the worst phases of an international move. Expect boredom, anger, and frustration—both from the children and from you! Still, there can be something special about this time. It is a bit like camping, like homesteading, like traveling across the Old West in a covered wagon. It is a time that can bring everyone in the family closer as you face difficult times and explore a new country together.

When Patricia arrived in Cuba with a newborn and a three-year-old, the family had to spend five months in temporary housing, an apartment that smelled strongly of mold. It was a frustrating time, and there were plenty of arguments and tears. However, her memories of that time are positive as well as negative.
